Milly Alcock, star of House of the Dragon, has been cast as Supergirl in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe. The young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in the first season of HBO’s Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon was portrayed by Australian-born actor Alcock.
She got the role over Meg Donnelly, who portrayed Supergirl in DC animated films like Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One, and Emilia Jones, the actress from CODA.
Although there has been some talk that the new Supergirl will feature in Gunn’s Superman Legacy, which is set to film in Georgia, that isn’t confirmed. We now know that she will feature in a DC-based film prior to acting in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, her standalone feature. Supergirl was first revealed at DC’s studio press day a year ago, but no director has been named for the project. It is based on the comic book series 2022 by Tom King, for which Bilquis Evely served as the illustrator.
“We see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, and Supergirl, who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, before coming to Earth when she was a young girl,” stated Gunn at the time of that announcement. “She’s not quite the Supergirl we’re used to seeing; she’s much more hardcore.”
