According to a Tweet from Exhibitor Relations, a sequel to 2015’s Goosebumps is in the works, and is expected to be released on January 26, 2018. The big screen adaption of the best selling R.L. Stine book series did well at the box office (bringing in $150 million with a $58 million budget), and received generally positive reviews (ourselves included), so an announcement of a sequel is not very surprising.
What is surprising is the release date. The first film had an October release, which was appropriate given the genre. However, January is the beginning of “Let’s just dump it here” season, so it seems odd to plan a January release a year out. One can assume that the studio feels there is too much competition for horror films (even family horror) in October.
Director Rob Letterman and writer Darren Lemke are expected to return, and we’ll likely see the original cast (Jack Black, Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush and Ryan Lee) return as well.
Prepare to be goosed again…you know who you are. Sony’s GOOSEBUMPS 2 is a go and drops January 26, 2018.
