Renowned artist Drew Struzan, best known for creating iconic posters for films such as Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Shawshank Redemption, Blade Runner, and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, is currently battling Alzheimer’s disease. Struzan’s wife, Dylan, went to social media to announce that while the famed artist was diagnosed several years ago, his symptoms have recently worsened.
“Good morning all. I’m Drew’s wife, Dylan Struzan. I come to you with a heavy heart. Several years ago, Drew was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. As you may know, the early stages are a slow progression of forgetfulness…For years, Drew and I have used the protocols that are supposed to, at the very least, arrest the forward momentum of the disease to no avail. His body has continued to decline. He is “still in there” as they say.”
Struzan is one of the most iconic movie poster artists of all time, known for his distinctive, hand-painted illustrations that have defined the look of Hollywood blockbusters for decades. Born in 1947, Struzan developed a unique artistic style that blends realism with a touch of fantasy, creating instantly recognizable images that capture the spirit of the films they represent.
His work has graced posters for some of the most beloved movies in cinema history, and his signature style—often featuring rich colors, dramatic lighting, and detailed character portraits—became synonymous with adventure and nostalgia.
Struzan’s process typically involved working with acrylics and airbrush techniques to create lifelike yet cinematic compositions. Unlike modern digital methods, his hand-crafted posters have a warmth and authenticity that many film fans cherish.
Although he retired from active commercial work in the 2000s, Struzan’s influence remains strong. His artwork continues to be celebrated by collectors, and his style has inspired generations of artists. For many, his posters are as iconic as the films themselves, serving as timeless pieces of movie history.
