After bringing in only $66.2M domestically at the box office, it looks like Divergent: Allegiant might have been the nail in the coffin for the theatrical run of the film series. Instead, Lionsgate in contemplating releasing the fourth and final film as a TV movie (possibly on Starz), with a smaller budget, and no marketing costs. The fourth film, titled Divergent: Ascendant, was scheduled to be released in June of 2017, but now that date is up in the air.
Fans of the film series, or the Veronica Roth books for that matter, might be happy to know that a TV series would likely follow, though. Fans of star Shailene Woodley might not be so happy, as her role in the next film is now uncertain. The actress was a bit taken back by the news:
“Honestly, I was on a plane when all that happened and I landed, and I’m like Whoa, what’s going on?! I need to talk and find out what the details are.”
