Die Hard director John McTiernan does not like the Captain America, and he made that very clear in a recent interview with the French edition of Premiere magazine. when asked about his thoughts on the current comic book films, he had this to say:
“These are films made by fascists. Comic book heroes are for businesses. Captain America…The cult of American hyper-masculinity is one of the worst things that has happened in the world during the last fifty years. Hundreds of thousands of people died because of this stupid illusion. So how is it possible to watch a movie called Captain America?”
We could discuss the merits or invalidity of these statements, but given McTiernan’s current financial situation, this comes off more as jealousy than anything else. After his conviction and imprisonment for wiretapping in 2013, the director filed for bankruptcy, and as of last year, lost control of his estates. What’s more sad is that when his lawyers fought this, claiming he had future film projects in the works that could settle his debts, the court denied him, basically implying his reputation as a filmmaker wasn’t valuable enough. McTiernan’s track record as a director has actually only been mediocre. Sure, he directed greats like Predator, Die Hard, and Die Hard with a Vengeance, but he also helmed Last Action Hero, Medicine Man and the Rollerball remake.
