David Fincher will be directing a sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar-winning film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, from a script by Tarantino. Brad Pitt will be returning as stuntman Cliff Booth. The film will stream on Netflix, where Fincher has a first-look agreement.
In addition to the fact that a well-known director is directing a follow-up to another well-known director’s picture, the production is particularly unusual because the property has changed from being a theater studio to a streaming service. Sony Pictures released Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in 2019, but Tarantino arranged a contract that would give him back the film’s copyright after a number of years. Given that this follow-up is being arranged under Fincher’s first-look agreement at Netflix, it is probable that Tarantino already has the private rights to the sequel.
The project came together after Tarantino abandoned his ideas for The Movie Critic, which was supposed to be his tenth and final film. Brad Pitt had been cast in the lead role, and a script had been written. The plot reportedly followed a cinema reviewer who wrote for a porn magazine in the 1970s. Rumor had it that Pitt would portray Cliff Booth from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, who was shown to be a huge cinema lover in Tarantino’s novelization of his own film.
Pitt and Fincher have previously collaborated on some of their most celebrated films, including The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Fight Club, and Se7en. It appears unlikely that Margot Robbie or Leonardo DiCaprio will return for the follow-up.
Despite his reputation as a writer-director, Tarantino has written scripts for films he did not ultimately direct, such as Robert Rodriguez’s From Dusk till Dawn and Tony Scott’s True Romance.
