The CW has cast its leads in their upcoming live action adaptation of the popular cartoon The Powerpuff Girls. Chloe Bennet (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Nashville) has been cast as Blossom, Dove Cameron (Liv & Maddie, The Descendants) has been cast as Bubbles, and Yana Perrault (Broadway’s Jagged Little Pill) has been cast as Buttercup.
Created by animator Craig McCracken, The Powerpuff Girls originally ran on Cartoon Network from 1998 through 2005, with a revival in 2016. A prequel movie was released in 2002. The show centered on Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, three kindergarten-aged girls with superpowers. The girls all live in the fictional city of Townsville with their father and creator, a scientist named Professor Utonium, and are frequently called upon by the city’s mayor to help fight nearby criminals and other enemies using their powers.
Clearly Bennet, Cameron and Perrault will not be playing the roles as kindergarteners, but rather young adults. The show will be produced by Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions, which is responsible for CW’s wildly successfully DC series, among many other shows.
