Legendary writer, producer, director and actor Carl Reiner has passed away of natural causes.
Reiner won two Emmys in the the 1950s for his work as a writer and performer on Sid Caesar’s “Your Show of Shows,” where he met his long-time comedy partner and friend, Mel Brooks. There Reiner and Brooks would create their iconic “2000 Year-Old Man” sketch, which became a successful album in the 60s. In 1961, Reiner created the classic Emmy Award winning television series “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” which starred Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore.
Reiner went on to co-write and directed four Steve Martin films, “The Jerk” in 1979, “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid “in 1982, “The Man with Two Brains” in 1983, and “All of Me” in 1984. In 2000, Reiner was honored with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center. He wrote several books, including his 2004 memoir My Anecdotal Life: A Memoir and the novels like NNNNN: A Novel. Reiner co-starred in Steven Soderbergh’s 2001 remake of “Ocean’s Eleven,” as well as its sequels Ocean’s Twelve (2004) and Ocean’s Thirteen (2007). Later in his career, he would make appearances in films and television shows like ‘House, “Two and a Half Men,” “Hot in Cleveland” and Jerry Seinfeld’s “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.”
Reiner’s wife Estelle died in 2008. Reiner is survived by his son, actor/director Rob Reiner, his daughter Sylvia Anne and son Lucas.
