Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Warner Bros. has tapped It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-creator and co-star Rob McElhenney to direct their upcoming adaption of the popular game, Minecraft.
Despite the fact that McElhenney is an unproven director, it’s not surprising they went the comedy route, given the success that WB had with The LEGO Movie. It’s also likely that McElhenney’s deal with Legendary Pictures to write and direct a family adventure film entitled Figment, about a boy and his family who’s greatest fears come to life, helped in their decision.
The fact that they are making a film based on Minecraft is also not surprising. It is one of the most popular video games ever made, and has become heroin for kids, minus all the itching and dry mouth.
